Back to School Tips & Tricks!

Sept. 13, 2019

Hey! It's Savonna, GWE Ambassador, with some tips for the new school year!

Some people dread the end of summer because that means the start of school is approaching. The thoughts of long study nights and our not so favorite teachers and professors start to creep in. But, before you start to stress over another school year starting up I have some helpful tips that may help you stay less stressed and more organized.

Tip #1: Stay in a Routine!

Whether you're in college or grade school it can be a lot to keep track of 4 or more classes each semester and or year. I myself sometimes struggle with making time to do homework for each class and on top of that have time to study for each class as well. It can be very stressful at times. That is why it is so important to stay in a routine. One of the main reasons of the importance to stay in a routine is because it helps you to get enough rest! Without rest you are more likely to get stressed and overwhelmed with the things you need to get done. So, once you have your class schedule try and take some time to make a note of when you will plan to do homework, studying and any other after school activities. Then choose a time that you would like to go to sleep every night so that you have a goal to push yourself to finish all of your homework and studying by the time you want to sleep! For a lot of people scheduling can change a lot depending on the week. This brings me into my next tip...

Tip #2: Stay Organized!

Student life and social life can be a lot to balance! Of course you want to hang out with friends but you know you need to spend time studying. I am a junior in college, so I definitely understand the struggle. Like I stated above it is important to stay in routine. In order to do this you have to be organized! Over the years cell phones have been something that a lot of people depend on. Just at your finger tips you have a tool to help you in your daily life! I have come to love using apps to help me stay organized. If you take a look in your phone's app store you can see hundreds of scheduling apps. I have tried a lot, but my favorite is an app called pocket lists. This app lets you create to-do lists. You get to categorize your lists by giving them a name and symbol image as seen in the picture below! This app also lets you choose a level of importance each task is, and it will remind you to do these tasks if you put a time in the checklist! When you complete the task you just click the check mark beside it and it will disappear! This app is great for keeping track of tests and homework due dates. I myself have many lists including a "things to do list" so I can keep track of tasks I have to get done.

Pocket lists!

Something that helps me to stay organized with homework is to print out and hang up my syllabus for each class I have. I take time each week to look at upcoming due dates and when the next test or quiz is and I then write down those dates in the pocket lists app to keep track of it. I love that you can choose when you want the app to alert you to complete a task! It is overall very helpful with staying organized with school and your daily every day life.

Tip #3: Study a lot!

Studying is something that you can't escape. You have to do it at some point in order to be successful in school. Of course studying can be hard when you have 3 tests and 2 quizzes in one week and all of them are for different classes. It is not fun. One source I love to use when it comes to studying is Quizlet. You can use their website or the app. Not only is Quizlet a great way to study but it also helps you have organized study guides all in one place. Quizlet lets you create flashcards and name the set for whichever class it is for. After you create the flashcards you can then choose to "learn" the terms by studying virtual flashcards. Once you know the terms better Quizlet gives you game options to learn the terms in a more fun way. Quizlet also will create for you to practice with. Through this site you can also search a subject you are struggling with a choose from hundreds of study flashcards that others created for the subject that you need!

This source is such a great way to get 100% prepared for tests and quizzes. It has helped me so much and I know it ca help you too!

Tip #4: Make sure to balance studying and homework!

I get overwhelmed on the weeks that I have tests and piles of homework. Sometimes I look at my to-do lists and have no idea where to start! Homework and study habits are different for everyone but here are some things that I like to do when it comes to successfully completing all my homework and studying.

  1. Start small: Before you start homework and studying look at everything you have to do and write it down. Then chose the easiest assignment to complete first. If you start with the "heaviest" assignment it is easier and more likely to get defeated and tired. So it is important to do the easy things first to boost your confidence in completing the more harder and time consuming tasks.
  2. Clean your study area: Whether you study in your room or at school don't underestimate the power of working in a clean space. Cluttered spaces can be a little distracting. Working in clean surroundings can give your mind a boost of enthusiasm to get things done!
  3. Get away from distractions! Distractions can be different for people. For me I cannot focus when the T.V is on. Sometimes it helps me to plug in some earphones and listen to music and other days I need complete quiet. Distractions just add time to your homework load. It is important to find your groove when it comes to getting school tasks done.
  4. Don't procrastinate! This is my final and most important homework tip. We all do it. (oops, guilty.) But, we can all help ourselves by planning ahead. Most teachers and professors provide and class syllabus of when homework is due. So, take the time to look at due dates in advance so you can plan accordingly of when you should complete homework. This is the best way to successfully balance school and social life. Plan, plan and plan!

Tip #5: Make the most of it!

You won't be in school forever. It is so important to make the most of it. School of course is about getting an education. But, it is also the time to get to know yourself and what you're passionate about. Don't be nervous to try and explore different clubs and after school activities. When school is over and you have to choose a job wouldn't you want to work in a field with something that you enjoy doing? School clubs and after school activities are there as a resource for you to find your passion! Interested in politics? Ask about joining the student government! Are you athletic? Take the chance and try out for your school team! Some schools even have the opportunity to create a club.

Whether you are in elementary school, middle school, high school or college make the most of your time. Take chances, be courageous, be confident and follow your heart! You know you the best. Don't hesitate to do the things you want to do instead of always wondering what if.

School is full of studying and loads of homework, but it can be fun too! It is up to you to on how fun your school career can be! Hopefully my 5 tips will help with that.

Look out for my next blog and have a great school year!
